Top 10 Best Places to Travel Alone in the USA

I’m so excited to talk about this because I think you’ll be really surprised. I’m Rehana, and today we are talking about the best places to travel if you’re solo in the USA particularly for solo female travelers, because I am a solo female traveler and I’m speaking from my own experience for the most part.

We have some tropical places, we have some snowy, winter wonderlands. We have Vegas as well. So, these places might not initially seem like a great place to travel solo but believe me, they are wonderful for a lot of various reasons, while not any rumpus, these areas unit the highest 10 best places to travel alone in the U.S.

10. Alabama Hills in California

The Alabama Hills in California, you might be wondering what the hell they even are; they’re in a remote part in California of the 395 if you’re making your way, say, from LA to Death Valley or you’re making your way up to Mammoth. And it’s just this little pull-off that you could very easily miss, but it is this rocky, really cool sort of wonderland.

It’s the gateway to the Mt. Whitney wilderness as well, and there’s a really cool arch there where you can see Mt. Whitney through an arch at sunset. It’s pretty stunning. This one behind me is the Mobius Arch, and it’s the most famous, but I’m the only person here, so that’s pretty cool.

So, the great thing that I love about the Alabama Hills is this is a nice distant vacation. You have plenty of space out there. It’s Bureau of Land Management lands; that means you can camp anywhere you want to be provided that you leave no trace, and it’s just so beautiful out there at night.

You see amazing stars. You might meet some other really cool campers if you want to. If you don’t, the wonderful thing about the Alabama Hills is it’s remote and it can be very secluded.

9. Arizona

So, there are a few really cool things that you can see out of Page. First, there is the very famous horseshoe bend that I’m sure you’ve seen before as well as the Antelope Canyon.

So perhaps after COVID, when you get a chance, check out Antelope Canyon. It is beautiful with these rays of light coming through at any time of day, but they do have peak photography hours that you can go through and take some awesome pics if you want to.

I actually had a really easy time meeting people there even though I was by myself.  So, you often will meet other campers, other hikers who are also alone and they want to see these beautiful places too.

8. The Bay Area in San Francisco

I’m recommending it here because all my friends freaking love it. Especially my European friends, they’re like, “Oh, this is so European,” but for real the nice thing about the Bay Area is that you can be, like, anyone there. You can find anything there.

I like to go because it’s really interesting in terms of architecture. The food is amazing. Be sure to hit up Chinatown, and I just love the view of the Golden Gate Bridge from Baker Beach. You can’t beat it.

7. Moab, Utah

Another place where it’s really easy to meet people. I’ve met people at the Dead Horse Point overlook. You just make friends so easily if you’re willing to be outgoing and chatty in places like this.  

Again, a lot of solo travelers really like to visit this part of Utah because you’ve got Arches National Park, you have the Mesa Overlook, you have Dead Horse Point, and so much more.

So, this is just a really beautiful part of Utah to visit, and it does attract the adventurous solo traveler out there, and I love meeting these kinds of people when I’m on the road. It also gives you some really nice solitude if that’s what you’re after as well.

6. Las Vegas, Nevada

You might not think that Las Vegas is the type of place that you would really want to go alone, but just imagine how many interesting people are also going to Las Vegas. So, you do get a lot of solo travelers who you can meet and also have a good time with.

Obviously when in Vegas, it’s important to keep your head on straight, so do have that in mind. It goes without saying especially for solo travelers from a safety perspective, but you can have a really good time in Vegas just meeting people, going to shows, eating really good food, take yourself out on a date, have a good time.

You can head out to nature, check out Seven Magic Mountains, see Valley of Fire. Vegas has a lot more to see than meets the eye.

5. The Big Island of Hawaii

This place is very near and dear to my heart. I’ve actually been to all of the visitable Hawaiian Islands, but I love the big island because you’ve got almost every microclimate of the world on this one island. Like, seriously, you have deserts, rain forests, you have snow on the tallest peak.

And if you love just outdoorsy, rugged adventures, it’s amazing, but I find Hawaii as a solo traveler can also be quite a friendly place. It’s easy to meet people. You can take surf lessons and meet people that way. Hiking in the national parks, it’s easier to strike up conversations with people.

There’s a lot of super cool Airbnb’s there that look like treehouses and stuff like that. So, I really think that no matter what you’re looking for, you can find it on the big island, but in general, I think Hawaii can be an amazing destination when you’re by yourself because you’d be surprised at how many other people are solo there, too, and very excited to hang out and meet each other.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

So New Orleans is often thought of as a place where what you do is party, but when I went there, I actually didn’t drink alcohol. I didn’t even eat meat, and I had an amazing, vegan, sober experience by myself in NOLA. I found that people were really friendly. I had a super good time just taking selfies around the French Quarter and some girl rode by on a bike and, like, cheered me on.

So that will color one’s experience, but there’s also really fun, vintage shopping there. If you’re into spooky stuff, you can do tours of the haunted parts of New Orleans, but I just found that it had everything that I really wanted like delicious food. You’ll walk around and have a good time by yourself.

People are very friendly, and they really like to help you experience New Orleans so they give really good advice.  And it’s super artistic. There’s just something to see everywhere, and to me, it was a really unique experience to do it alone.

3. Seattle, Washington

Seattle obviously is the gateway to so many amazing, beautiful national parks in Washington and personally, I love going on solo outdoor adventures. You’ve got Mount Rainier National Park, you’ve got Olympic, and then you’ve got the Cascades.

And it’s just so much beautiful hiking and outdoor scenes to experience, but it’s not so remote that you’re like ever totally alone. This is a trip I would definitely enjoy by myself. Seattle is a super vibrant city as well, so it’s great to fly into and fly out of. Another great foodie spot and just overall an approachable city with lots of friendly people and lots of really good outdoorsy options.

2. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is known as the Tale of Massachusetts and a family-friendly beach destination in New England but it’s also great for solo female travelers. It’s safe and super easy to get around, and it’s downright beautiful.

It’s just an hour’s drive from Boston or Providence, and I do recommend that you have a car to freely explore, but you’ll find beautiful Sand Dunes, beautiful beaches, and amazing sunsets out there, and then finally New York City.

1. New York City

Obviously, New York City in the U.S. offers so many boroughs to explore and so many different opportunities. The couch surfing there can be amazing. Just have your bullshit meter on high alert as you’re reading, and make sure you’re comfortable with the couch surfing situation.

But even then, Airbnb experiences can be really amazing. There’s a company called Eat with where you can eat with local people and they cook food for you. Obviously, this isn’t like a COVID-friendly recommendation, but again you can plan this trip for the future. We need to dream for the future right now, don’t we?

So, this recommendation is one that I think will be amazing in a couple of years’ time, maybe one year’s time, maybe it’s amazing right now but either way, New York has so much to offer. There’s always something you can find to do there. There are so many different neighborhoods that you can explore, and it’s really easy to get around on public transportation.
